What NMAT Is and Who Needs It
The National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) is a national mandatory entrance exam for enrollment into any medical school in the Philippines. This test is the first requirement for all aspiring students who aim to enter 4.5 year MD course (called MBBS in India). The examination has Part I on mental aptitude and Part II on core science subjects. Before getting into medical education, this exam is compulsory for international students and Indian medical aspirants who have appeared for the NEET-UG. What Is NMAT (Philippines)?
The Center for Educational Measurement (CEM) conducts NMAT on behalf of the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges (APMC). For international students, NMAT often works as a formality. If you already hold a bachelor's degree or a premed qualification, some colleges only ask you to sit the exam, not clear a specific score, to move into the MD program.
For Indian students, the road is longer. India follows a 10+2 pattern, while the Philippines follows 10+3. This is a gap that the completion OF class 12 program is not equivalent to Philippine standards for direct MD entry. For MBBS in Philippines, they first require a BS pre-med bridge program that typically takes one to one and a half years to complete. The National Medical Commission (NMC) confirmed in 2022 that this BS course cannot be treated as equal to India's MBBS coursework, since it repeats content similar to Class 11 and 12 biology. After finishing the BS course, you sit for NMAT to qualify for the 4.5 year MD program.
NMAT Eligibility Criteria

For Indian students

NMAT Exam Pattern 2026

Part I

NMAT Exam Dates & Registration Windows 2026
NMAT runs twice a year, once in March or April and again in October or November. Registration usually opens about two months before each exam window.

Once you pass, you receive a Certificate of Eligibility for Admission (CEA), valid for two years. You get three total attempts at NMAT. After three failed attempts, you cannot retake the exam again.
Important: NMAT Alone Doesn't Guarantee Recognition in India
Passing NMAT gets you into an MD program, but it does not settle every question for Indian students planning to practice back home.
