How much does it cost to study in Finland?
Year one costs about €17,480 to €33,120 (Rs.19 to Rs.36 lakh) before scholarships. That adds tuition of €8,000 to €18,000 to 12 months of living costs. The low end uses €790 a month in a regional city. The high end uses €1,260 a month in the capital area.

Rent takes €350 to €600 of that. A full two-year degree costs about Rs.38 lakh to Rs.72 lakh before waivers and part-time pay.
Migri, the Finnish Immigration Service, requires €800 per month for the permit. That means €9,600 for a year or about Rs.10.5 lakh. Keep the money in your own account. Unpaid tuition must sit there on top. Work income cannot back your first permit. Family declarations rarely count unless a bank education loan supports them.
Ways to cut the bill:
- Choose a regional city such as Oulu, Lappeenranta or Lahti. Rent and food cost less than in Helsinki.
- Ask for a waiver inside your application form.
- Rent from a student housing foundation, such as HOAS in Helsinki, TOAS in Tampere or TYS in Turku.
- Work up to 30 hours a week once you settle in.
- Pay early where a UAS offers a discount.
Which scholarships for Finland are real?
Universities award them. Study in Finland states that no government scholarship exists for regular bachelor's or master's study. Most awards are tuition waivers of 50 or 100 percent.

Helsinki gives up to one Finland Scholarship per master's programme. Most of its waivers cover 50 percent. The Finland Scholarship renews for year two if you earn 55 credits in year one.
List six options in your application. Mix one or two top-ranked programmes with safer picks and compare each programme's waiver policy before you rank them.
Waivers rarely cover rent, food or insurance. Budget as if you win nothing, then treat any waiver as savings. Ask for consideration inside your Studyinfo application. Separate forms are usually not needed.
How do you apply and when?
Apply through Studyinfo.fi. The main joint application for English-taught programmes starting in autumn 2027 runs 7 to 21 January 2027 and closes at 3 p.m. Finnish time. Some universities set their own dates. Aalto's master's window runs 7 December 2026 to 5 January 2027 and some business programmes open in October. A small January intake exists, but its 2027 round closed on 10 September 2026.

Most research universities sit near these scores. Scores stay valid for two years. Aalto's list names only IELTS, TOEFL iBT and PTE. Duolingo works at only a few applied sciences universities, so book one of the three main tests.
What are the visa, work and spouse rules?
Finland gives students a residence permit, not a visa. Apply on EnterFinland before you travel, pay €600 online and show €9,600 in your account. Most decisions take about a month. The permit covers your whole degree.
- Book biometrics at a Finnish embassy or a VFS Global centre.
- Buy health insurance that meets Migri standards.
- Bring admission letter and original documents.
Things that cause permit delays:
- You keep money in your parent's account instead of yours.
- Not counting unpaid tuition when counting funds.
- Purchasing non-Migri approved insurance.
- Applying before you hold an admission offer.
Part-time work is allowed for an average of 30 hours a week or 1,560 hours a year. You can work more in holidays if your yearly average stays at 30. Credited internships and thesis work fall outside the limit.

What jobs and permanent residence can you expect?
A Finnish degree lets you apply for a two-year permit to look for work or start a business. Permanent residence takes six years of continuous residence for most people. That rule applies to applications from 8 January 2026.

Use your part-time work years to build Finnish contacts and a reference. Track long trips abroad, because permanent residence needs continuous residence.
Employers hire software engineers, data specialists, AI experts, energy researchers and business analysts. Many tech firms in Espoo, Tampere and Oulu work in English. Finnish still opens more doors. Start in year one. Universities run language courses and the University of Eastern Finland offers them free to admitted students.
Can you do a PhD in Finland for free?
Yes. A PhD in Finland carries no tuition at public universities, for any nationality. Many doctoral researchers hold paid university posts or grants. You need a relevant master's degree, a research proposal and a supervisor who backs you. After a master's, you apply for a residence permit for scientific research instead of a student permit. Ask supervisors about paid positions before you apply.
Can you study nursing in Finland?
Yes, through a UAS. Hospital placements need working Finnish, though. The Bachelor of Health Care (Registered Nurse) takes 3.5 to 4 years and earns 210 to 240 ECTS. Finnish lessons start in semester one.
To study nursing in Finland, aim for B1 to B2 Finnish (YKI level 3 or 4). Then register with Valvira, the national health authority. Hospitals face staff shortages, so licensed nurses often find work fast. The degree meets EU rules. Fees run about €6,000 to €12,000 a year. Nursing is a bachelor's degree, so you apply after 10+2. It does not suit you if you want to work only in English.
Is MBBS in Finland possible in English?
Not as a full English-taught degree at most public universities. MBBS in Finland means a six-year Licentiate of Medicine (360 ECTS). Clinical years run in Finnish or Swedish and clinical entry needs Finnish at YKI level 4.
That clashes with India's rules. The NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 require English as the medium for the entire course. They also require at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution and NEET-UG. Finnish-language degrees carry no tuition. Get written proof of the teaching language for the full degree before you apply. For English-medium MBBS, compare countries that teach the whole course in English. If you want to practise in India, qualify for NEET-UG first.
Is there any study abroad program in Finland?
Yes. Exchange terms last one or two semesters through partner universities. Your home university nominates you and you earn credits without a Finnish degree. For Finland study abroad with a permit and work rights, a full degree is the main route.
