The National Medical Commission has proposed a key rule change. MBBS students may now get 10 years to finish their degree. This includes the mandatory internship.
NMC Secretary Dr. Raghav Langer issued this through a Gazette notification dated 18 May 2026. The proposal is a new entry under the Graduate Medical Education (Amendment) Regulations, 2026. It makes certain changes in Clause 21, Chapter V of GMER 2023. It is not a final rule yet.
Key Changes at a Glance
Here is exactly what the GMER Amendment 2026 changes - and what stays the same.
| Rule | Under GMER 2023 (Current) | Under Proposed Amendment 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Max duration to complete MBBS + internship | 9 years from date of admission | 10 years from date of joining First MBBS |
| Attempts for First Professional MBBS | 4 attempts | 4 attempts (unchanged) |
| Internship included in time limit | Yes | Yes |
The maximum duration for MBBS in India increases by one year. The attempt limit for First Professional MBBS stays at four. No change there.
Who Benefits From the Proposed Change
This rule helps students who face delays. One's speed can be slowed by any health problem, failure in exams or personal difficulties.
Here is who this affects:
- Students with delays due to exam failures, illness, or personal circumstances
- Students who need more time to complete the compulsory rotatory medical internship
- The 10-year window starts from the date you join First MBBS, not from any later date
One important point: if you have already used all four attempts to clear First Professional MBBS, this rule does not change anything for you. That cap stays firm at four.
