Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy, located in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, stands as one of the medical universities within the Russian Federation. In 2018, the institution underwent a name change, becoming Privolzhsky Research Medical University. With its establishment dating back to 1920, the university boasts over a century of academic expertise, making it a favorable choice for pursuing MBBS in Russia. Despite this, it's noteworthy that the Indian Embassy in Russia holds a contrasting opinion, citing the university's unfavorable ranking in the list of Russian medical institutions as per their assessments.

The language instruction for the medicine course is usually bilingual, i.e., the students will be taught partly in English and partly in Russian. In this case, the students must study the Russian language beforehand to be comfortable learning in a bilingual program. However, MOKSH recommends that students prefer only English-taught programs readily available in other Russian medical universities.

The bilingual mode of the program serves as one of the reasons the Nizhny Novgorod Medical Academy is ruled out by many Indian students when choosing a university to study for MBBS in Russia. This avoidance can also be attributed to the institution's low passing MCI ratio. Of the few Indian students who have graduated from this university, a meagre percentage have made it through the former Indian licensing test, i.e., the MCI screening test. Hence, this raises questions about whether the university is suitable for Indian students or not.

About Nizhny Novgorod in Russia

Nizhny Novgorod is the administrative point of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (Oblast means province). The city is at central Russia's Oka River and Volga River meeting points. It has over 12 lakh citizens, which makes it the 6th largest city in Russia. Nizhny Novgorod holds significance in terms of an economic, transportation, scientific, cultural, and educational centre. Moreover, it is the prime location for river tourism in Russia.

The waterways are one of the popular modes of transport in Nizhny Novgorod. In the summer, ferries move from Nizhny Novgorod to other cities in Russia, such as Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Different modes of transport include railways, highways, and inter-city bus facilities. The Nizhny Novgorod airport goes by the official name of Stringino International Airport, and it has direct flights to major other cities in Russia.

Is studying at Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy good or bad?

Nizhny Novgorod is one of the oldest universities in Russia, with academic experience spanning a century! Despite this, there are specific issues faced by students, especially Indians, that make it less desirable among Indian students. Some of the problems are highlighted below.

  • As previously mentioned, the university offers a bilingual program for medicine courses. MOKSH recommends students seek admission only to universities that provide purely English-taught programs. Even though it is essential to learn the Russian language, the purpose of learning should be to converse with patients during clinical postings easily, lead a comfortable lifestyle while studying MBBS in Russia, etc. and not to proceed to check in that language.
  • Those Indian students who have studied at Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy have not been able to perform well at the former MCI Screening Test (National Exit Test at present), which indeed indicates that the university may not be suitable for Indian students.
  • Speaking of Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy ranking, it is ranked 306 among the total 375 Russian higher education institutions. Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy's world ranking is 6551 out of 40,000 higher education institutions, which leaves a poor impression. If we speak about the ratings by the Indian Embassy, it is ranked 24 out of 28 medical institutions in Russia, falling under the Ministry of Healthcare.
  • Even though the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical University fees are way lower than private medical colleges in India, it is relatively higher than its Russian counterparts, who are even older than Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy and offer purely English-taught programs. For instance, the Crimea Federal University, a well-revered university in Russia, was established in 1918 and provided a purely English-taught MBBS program at a cost much lower than Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy MBBS fees.

Medical PG IN UK (PLAB)

Due to the close proximity of Moldova to UK, many of the students plan to do their Medical PG from UK. Till 2024, the Professional & Linguistic Assessments Board Test (PLAB test) is the instrument to assess the skills and knowledge of an International Medical Graduate. It also judges whether they are fit to be trained to practice medicine in the UK.

In short, an IMG's performance in PLAB determines her eligibility to practice in the UK. The PLAB test has two stages. PLAB 1 is an exam that has 180 MCQs that tests your recall. On the other hand, PLAB 2 is a practical OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Exam) that tests your clinical skills.

The GMC ascertains your linguistic skills by assessing your score in specific tests. It may be the IELTS (Band Score 7.0 or higher) or OET (Grade B in reading, writing, listening & speaking).

After you pass PLAB 1 & 2, you apply for the GP registration. There is one constraint. You have a window of 2 years after clearing PLAB 2 during which you may apply no later.

By 2024, the UK Medical Licensing Assessment will replace the PLAB. Consequently, the GMC UK is going to change certain things in PLAB and create the UKMLA exam.

Once the Language formalities are done, you get into the phase where you do Observer-ship from a German hospital approved by the German Medical Council. This is followed by Residency.
This may sound simple here but the process is quite complicated. To know more about PG in Germany after your MBBS in India,
