Language requirements for MS

Just like the word “German” itself means that most of the programs in the universities are taught in German language. The requirement which every student is asked for is the certification of proficiency in the German language. For this matter, there are two tests available:

  1. The first one is, Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH, which means a German language examination held for your university entrance).
  1. The second test is, the “TestDaF” (which means test of German as a foreign language).

DSH is held only in different universities in Germany and nowhere else apart from that. However the second test i.e. the “TestDaF” can easily be taken in more than 90 countries, globally. Be aware that you cannot chose the test as per your wish but the university will chose it for you, depending upon the kind of university, you apply in.

Glad tidings! For the students who are engaged in the short-term exchange programs, a range of English-taught programs are available for you which are growing day by day. So you do not need to worry much particularly if you are doing Masters in Germany.

As provided by the German Academic exchange service (DAAD), if English is not your first language and you wish to study English–taught programs, then you have to prove your proficiency by passing in IELTS/TOEFEL (English language test).

When is the best time for you to submit your application?

It’s your wish to apply for either the winter semester or the summer one. Also, in many of the German universities, you can apply twice a year i.e. for both of them.

Although the summer semesters are held in the month of April to September but in Fachhochschulen (university of applied sciences in Germany) has a distinct system, altogether where the semesters runs from March to august.

In case of the winter semesters, the time period is from the month of April to the month of September for Fachhochschulen (university of applied sciences in Germany) and for other universities, it is October to March respectively.

The enrollments for winter semesters are to be made before 15th July and enrollments for summer semesters are to be made before 15th January.

Nevertheless, the deadline of application still varies from institutes to institute and universities to university. Even the same institute has the right to set different dates for every MS program. Be double sure of the deadlines for your course.

If you are applying for the first time, it is highly advisable for you to submit your application six months prior to the deadline to avoid any sort of circumstances. Also, if you apply in advance you can take care of all the corrections and will be asked for any document, in case if it is mistaken or left.

How to apply for masters in Germany?

Before you apply for Masters in Germany, you must get the glimpse of what is meant by “Hochschulzugangsberechtigung” (abbreviated as HZB). You might find it laborious to pronounce but it more significant to perceive the intended meaning of it. It stands for “higher education entrance qualification”.

Don’t be troubled! If you have completed your graduation from any other country and still wish to study masters in Germany, yes it is accepted by HZB. But then, again, the requirements will vary as per the institute where you wish to enroll in or the university from where you have completed your graduation.

Still there are some master degrees which might ask to submit your minimum credit score that you have earned so far in the particular field of study.  Each and every condition is set up by the department, offering the program.

The applications for master degree program in Germany can be submitted in two ways either via online portal or directly in the university. If you succeed in submitting all the required documents you are sent to the respective university for further assessment.

Not every university in Germany follow these criteria of admission, some of them may even ask you to visit for your application process.

Every institute has its own norms and conduct for the application and admission process. But the basic documents remains the same like, the official copy of your academic qualifications, a passport sixe photograph, copy of proficiency language program results and a reasonable application fee (not same in every institute).
